Supergirl Review: Milly Alcock Shines in a Predictable but Promising DC Reboot

After the success of Superman, I walked into Supergirl hoping DC had another home run on its hands and would finally be able to compete with the Marvel Universe. While I don’t think the film reaches those same heights, I also don’t think the films the hate and extreme bashing it’s receiving online.

Supergirl for most audiences will be a perfectly enjoyable superhero movie. It’s not groundbreaking, and it doesn’t reinvent the genre, however it does show a version of Kara that I hope we get to see the progression of in future films.

Milly Alcock is the film’s biggest strength. She is able to bring warmth, humor, vulnerability, but just enough edge to make Kara feel like her own rather than simply a female version of Superman.

Jason Momoa is a scene stealer in this film. In the film you will either find him cringy or fun but I enjoyed his performance throughly. He’s easily one of my favorite parts of the entire film.

My biggest criticism is that the story feels incredibly predictable. Nearly every major plot point can be seen coming from a mile away, and the movie doesn’t take any risks. There’s never really a moment that completely surprises you.

Ironically, the film also feels about ten years too late.

Had this exact movie been released around 2016, when superhero films were hitting their commercial peak, I honestly think it could have been a massive box office success. Today, audiences expect a little more from comic book movies, and Supergirl doesn’t quite push the genre forward in the way Superman recently did.

One quick note for anyone planning to stay after the credits: there is no post-credits scene, so once the credits begin, feel free to head out!

Overall, while Supergirl may not soar quite as high as Superman, I think there’s still plenty of room for this version of Supergirl to grow.
