Wicked: Part One is finally here, and it is truly as magical as we all hoped. From director Jon M. Chu, this first of the two-part adaptation brings the Land of Oz to life in ways that are so visually stunning, they beggar all description. The second that swooping overture starts up, you’re there. But, of course, the real magic comes from the story and the performances.

Let’s get to the obvious: Miss Ariana Grande Butera. Ariana’s take on Glinda is everything—sparkly, witty, and just the right amount of extra. Her rendition of “Popular” made famous by Kristin Chenoweth on Broadway is an ode while she still makes its her own. Her pop princess persona is completely non existent and presents a Glinda that is incredibly laugh out loud funny and dynamic. Ariana is my front runner for Best Supporting Actress nominee at the 2025 Oscars.

Then there is Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. She is commanding, and raw in her portrayal of the misunderstood green girl. “Defying Gravity” is an emotional event all to itself, and Cynthia nails every note, every emotion, and every ounce of epicness that song demands.

The friendship, tension, and, final goodbye between Elphaba and Glinda all feel incredibly real and grounded amidst the flying monkeys and wizardry. You believe in the connection they share, and every high and low hits all the more.

Now, I do have a bone to pick with the pacing: Wicked split into two parts does mean Part One spends quite some time developing relationships and setting up the stakes for that epic fallout we know is coming in Part Two. Some scenes feel a little stretched, and while I love the world-building, it does make the second act drag just a tad. But when it’s good? Oh, it’s good.

Visually, this movie is a feast. The set design, costumes, and effects bring Oz to life in ways we’ve never seen before. From Shiz University to the Emerald City, everything is just so lush.

Overall, Wicked: Part One is a love letter to the fans while offering something new to those who have never had the chance to see it. Yes, it leaves you wanting more but isn’t that the point? I know fans are already counting down the days until Part Two.

Pros: Ariana and Cynthia shine, dynamic visuals and cinematography

Cons: How did they manage to stretch a 2 half hour stage play into just part one of a film?

  1. Wicked- a musical I have loved for 18 years. Didn’t like that it became a two part film (making it hard to know if I even should watch the movie)
